Background

Suzhou Broadcasting & Television Newspaper Office is a Category II non-profit public institution under Suzhou Broadcasting & Television Station, with a staff of around 50. Its mission is to promote and extend the reach of radio and television, and its work spans the news gathering, editing and layout of the 'Suzhou Broadcasting & Television News', computer typesetting, laser phototypesetting, advertising agency services, and creative planning and printing. A long-established local name in Suzhou's radio-and-television print media, the office handles a large volume of image and layout files every day as an inherent part of its business.

Challenges

Before adopting an efficient NAS, the office relied mainly on traditional file-transfer methods for collaboration, which led to “excessive file transfers” and significantly hampered the efficiency of image editing and layout. The legacy equipment had also suffered hard-drive errors in the past, exposing the risks of single-point storage. The office urgently needed an enterprise-class storage solution that could deliver both TV-station-grade file sharing and centralized, secure backup.

Solution

To fully resolve its office file-sharing and backup challenges, Suzhou Broadcasting & Television Newspaper Office deployed the QNAP TS-1283XU-RP-8G enterprise-class rackmount NAS, in 2019 and again in 2024. The unit mainly serves the core editorial team of about 30 office staff and is fitted with multiple 4TB enterprise-class hard drives that form a secure RAID redundant array. The solution makes extensive use of file-sharing features to support daily image-editing work, complemented by a comprehensive data-backup mechanism.

Achievements

Introducing QNAP NAS delivered immediate improvements for the office. First, the centralized architecture greatly strengthened the security of editorial data: even when a drive reports an error, the problem can be resolved quickly by replacing it. Second, the high-performance shared pool on the local network makes it far easier for more than 30 staff to access and edit image files, eliminating the excessive, cumbersome transfers of layout files and image assets between individual workstations and significantly boosting overall editorial efficiency.
